A Fredericton lawyer has lost his license to practice law after a disciplinary body found him guilty of multiple acts of professional misconduct. Stephen Hill was disbarred effective August 31, according to a notice released last week by the Law Society of New Brunswick’s discipline committee.

The discipline committee found Hill guilty on several serious charges. These included misappropriating client funds, failing to complete work for clients, and failing to respond to complaints filed against him within the required timeframe.

The committee also determined that Hill effectively admitted his guilt. He did so by failing to respond to the complaints by the law society’s deadline.
Earlier Suspension Led to Disbarment
This was not the first action the law society took against Hill. The discipline committee had already suspended him from practicing law in February 2025, after it received complaints about his conduct.
However, the suspension was not the end of the matter. The ongoing complaints and Hill’s failure to engage with the process ultimately led to his full disbarment.
Disbarment is the most severe professional sanction available to the law society. It permanently removes a lawyer’s right to practice law in New Brunswick. The Law Society of New Brunswick oversees the conduct of lawyers in the province and has the authority to discipline members who breach professional standards.
