Charges against two men linked to the 2023 Toronto Pearson Airport gold heist have been dropped on back-to-back days, bringing a measure of relief to both men after years of legal proceedings.
Amit Jalota, an Oakville resident, had his charges withdrawn in a Brampton court on Tuesday. His lawyer, Leora Shemesh, confirmed the withdrawal and said Jalota was relieved after consistently maintaining his innocence throughout the case.

“Mr. Jalota is certainly delighted that the Crown finally chose to withdraw the charges against him,” Shemesh said in a statement. However, she added that her client had endured serious consequences over the past three years. “He has been punitively and unreasonably punished as he was forced to navigate the criminal justice system and the fallout of allegations that were publicly broadcast both nationally and internationally.”
Restrictions and Reputational Damage
Shemesh said the impact on Jalota extended well beyond the courtroom. After his name and photograph circulated widely in media coverage, he lost access to banking services at Ontario financial institutions. He also faced restrictions on where he could work.
“He was at all times entirely innocent of these allegations,” she said.
The following day, Ali Raza — another man accused in connection with the Toronto Pearson gold heist — also had his charge withdrawn. Raza appeared in a Brampton courtroom on Wednesday, where the Crown dropped the case against him.
“I am happy,” Raza said as he left court.
His lawyer, Brij Mohan, said Raza had maintained his innocence from the start. “These weak allegations have ruined this man’s life,” Mohan said. “He is standing in front of you with his head high today, and I hope it gives him a chance to regain his integrity in his community.” Mohan also noted the allegations had deeply affected Raza’s business, reputation and family.
The 2023 Heist That Made International Headlines
Raza and Jalota were two of nine people charged in connection with the April 17, 2023 theft. That night, thieves stole approximately $20 million worth of gold bars from an Air Canada cargo facility at Toronto Pearson International Airport.
According to police, the shipment arrived on an Air Canada flight from Zurich, Switzerland. One suspect then used a fraudulent airway bill to obtain the cargo.
The case drew significant international attention. Earlier this year, Arsalan Chaudhary, 44, pleaded guilty for his role as the mastermind behind the theft. A court sentenced him to four years in prison and ordered him to repay $22 million to Brinks Canada.
Remaining Accused Head to Trial
Despite the dropped charges against Jalota and Raza, the case is far from over. Court records show the remaining accused are scheduled to stand trial beginning September 28.
Meanwhile, the lawyers for both Jalota and Raza say their clients and families are now focused on moving forward. After years of public scrutiny and legal uncertainty, both men walk away without a conviction.
