Thousands of mourners packed Tenerife’s Estadio Heliodoro Rodriguez Lopez on Saturday to pay their final respects to striker Jesus de Miguel, who died at the age of 30 following a cardiac arrest. The emotional tribute drew players, club officials and supporters from across Spanish football, united in grief for a young player whose life ended far too soon.
A Tragic Loss on the Pitch

The collision shocked the Spanish football community. As a result, tributes poured in from clubs and fans throughout the country in the days that followed.
An Emotional Farewell at the Stadium
A large banner displaying De Miguel’s black-and-white photograph hung behind a stage at the centre of the pitch. The words “Forever Demi” appeared beneath his image. Demi was the nickname his friends and teammates used for him.
After a video featuring footage from his Tenerife debut, supporters chanted: “De Miguel, we love you.” Players sat alongside representatives from every club in Spain’s top two divisions. Among those present was Real Madrid director Emilio Butragueno. Tears flowed freely throughout the stands.
Club captain Enric Gallego delivered a heartfelt speech, pausing repeatedly as he struggled to compose himself. “To speak of you in the past tense is tremendously unfair,” Gallego said. “It’s still hard to believe that this has happened to us, Demi. You’ll always be one of us.” He added: “We’re still struggling to come to terms with the fact that you won’t be with us again.”
A Nation Mourns
The 90-minute tribute in Santa Cruz de Tenerife also included speeches from club directors, followed by a religious service. Meanwhile, matches across Spain’s divisions over the weekend observed a minute’s silence in De Miguel’s honour.
The outpouring of grief reflected how deeply the 30-year-old had touched those around him. His death has left a lasting mark on Spanish football, and the tribute at his home stadium ensured that Jesus de Miguel received a farewell worthy of the player and person he was.
