The 78th Primetime Emmy Awards delivered a landmark night for television, with the medical drama The Pitt and the comedy series Hacks dominating the major categories. The two shows entered the ceremony as the top nominees in their respective genres and carried that momentum through to the winners’ circle.
A Historic Night for the Host
Mariska Hargitay hosted the ceremony, making history as the first woman to host the Emmy Awards in 15 years. The longtime Law & Order: Special Victims Unit star and three-time Emmy winner last saw a female host take the stage when Jane Lynch led the show in 2011. The evening also marked two significant milestones: the 30th anniversary of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and the 50th anniversary of Charlie’s Angels, with cast members from both shows appearing as presenters.

The Pitt Leads the Drama Field
Going into the night, The Pitt led all nominees with 25 nominations. The emergency room drama had already proven itself a major awards contender, previously earning wins for best drama series, best actor for Noah Wyle, and best supporting actress for Katherine LaNasa.
Both Wyle and LaNasa received nominations again this year. In addition, Taylor Dearden, Fiona Dourif, and Sepideh Moafi all earned supporting actress nods. Together, The Pitt claimed four of the seven available supporting actress spots in the drama category. Meanwhile, Patrick Ball, Shawn Hatosy, and Gerran Howell each received supporting actor nominations for the same series.
The show also performed strongly in the guest acting categories. Ernest Harden Jr. won guest actor in a drama for his role in The Pitt, while Shailene Woodley took the guest actress in a drama award for Paradise.
Hacks Closes Its Run on a High Note
On the comedy side, Hacks led all nominees with 24 nominations for its final season. Jean Smart has now won best actress in a comedy for all four previous seasons of the show. Her co-star Hannah Einbinder, who won supporting actress in a comedy last year, earned her fifth nomination. Co-creator and cast member Paul W. Downs also received a nomination in the supporting actor category.
Betty Gilpin won guest actress in a comedy for Widow’s Bay, while Rob Reiner took the guest actor in a comedy award for The Bear.
Winners Across Major Categories
Beyond the two leading shows, several other series made a strong showing. Widow’s Bay received 19 nominations, while Pluribus — from Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul creator Vince Gilligan — earned 18 nods. Netflix’s Beef topped the limited or anthology series field with 16 nominations.
In the television movie category, Remarkably Bright Creatures took the top prize. David Harbour won supporting actor in a limited series or movie for DTF St. Louis, and Linda Cardellini claimed supporting actress in the same category, also for DTF St. Louis.
