After more than two decades of uncertainty, the family of Frank Davis finally has answers. A volunteer dive team discovered the remains of the Creston, British Columbia man inside a submerged vehicle at the bottom of the Kootenay River. Davis was 40 years old when he vanished in 2004, leaving behind family members who spent 22 years wondering what had become of him.
Divers Locate Car After Eight-Hour Search
The team responsible for the discovery is Adventures with Purpose, an American diving organization known for locating missing people and submerged vehicles. The group documents its searches on YouTube and works alongside families and law enforcement at no cost. Their goal is to bring answers to cases that have gone unsolved for years.

The team follows a structured search method. First, they identify the missing person’s last known location. Then they gather available information to map out areas where a vehicle may have entered the water. After that, they use sonar equipment to scan the riverbed, methodically eliminating sections until they find a lead.
In Davis’ case, the search stretched into its eighth hour before the team made their breakthrough. Diver Bryon Leisek said the car turned up on the opposite side of the river during the eleventh search area. “We can work very fast,” Leisek noted. The vehicle was found flipped upside down on the riverbed. Because the car had been underwater for more than 22 years, much of Davis’ body had decomposed. Leisek said it was difficult to confirm human remains were present until he moved closer.
Family Reacts to Long-Awaited Discovery
For Davis’ brother Reid, the news triggered an overwhelming rush of emotion. After so many years without answers, Reid admitted he had nearly given up hope of ever knowing the truth. “It was numbing at first,” he said. “After so long, you kind of think that you’re not going to have this moment ever, and then just a flood of memories again — all these things that you kind of put away over the years.”
Reid now hopes the family can move forward. In particular, he wants to share stories about Frank with Frank’s youngest son, who was only two years old when his father disappeared.
Frank’s niece, Lenelle Davis, also remembers the uncertainty that followed his disappearance. She recalled the lasting pain it caused her grandmother — Frank’s mother — who died without ever learning what happened to her son. “How could you ever have any peace not knowing what has happened to your child?” Lenelle said. “I always felt heartbroken for her.”
Cause of Death Remains Unclear, No Foul Play Suspected
Although the discovery answers where Davis ended up, it does not fully explain how he entered the river. Kade Pigg, a producer with Adventures with Purpose, said the team believes the car entered the water near an abandoned ferry crossing. However, the exact circumstances remain unknown. “We just determined the where, not the why,” Pigg said.
Police confirmed that Davis’ death is not considered suspicious. Authorities do not suspect foul play.
For the Davis family, the recovery brings a sense of relief after more than two decades of not knowing. As Lenelle put it, there is comfort in finally knowing “he’s home and he’s resting and we’re just not wondering.”
