US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has firmly rejected reports suggesting he plans to leave the Trump administration. Speaking to The New York Times on Thursday, Rubio said it has “always been my plan” to serve President Donald Trump through the end of his term.
Rubio Denies Exit Plans
Earlier on Thursday, Bloomberg News reported that Rubio was weighing whether to step down. The report also claimed Rubio had spoken with White House officials about leaving, but that they asked him to stay. Rubio pushed back directly against those claims. “I don’t know where these things come from, to be honest with you,” he told The New York Times.

The State Department also responded sharply. Dylan Johnson, Assistant Secretary of State for Global Public Affairs, called the Bloomberg report “totally made up.” He also dismissed a separate report by The Independent, which claimed Rubio was preparing a 2028 Republican presidential campaign bid, as “completely baseless fake news.”
2028 Presidential Speculation Grows
Rubio currently holds two senior roles. In addition to serving as Secretary of State, he also serves as Trump’s national security adviser. Many political observers consider him a strong potential candidate for the 2028 presidential race.
Just days before Tuesday’s midterm elections, Rubio made a notable appearance alongside Trump on the campaign trail. He briefly stepped onto the podium and addressed a cheering crowd at a rally. The appearance fueled further speculation about his political ambitions.
However, Rubio declined to discuss his future plans on Thursday. “I literally will not talk about 2028 anymore,” he said. He has previously stated that he would support Vice President JD Vance if Vance chose to run for president. Vance is also widely seen as a possible 2028 contender.
Administration Signals Stability
Despite the swirling reports, both Rubio and the State Department moved quickly to project a message of stability. The denials came after Republicans faced losses in the midterm elections, which prompted fresh questions about the administration’s direction and personnel.
For now, Marco Rubio appears focused on his current duties. His public statements and the State Department’s firm rebuttal suggest he intends to remain in his role for the foreseeable future.
