Dylan Sprouse has revealed that the only residual payment he ever received for his hit Disney Channel series The Suite Life of Zack and Cody was a check for just five cents. The disclosure came during an appearance on the “Wildmen” podcast, hosted by his former co-star Phil Lewis.
A Popular Show With Little Financial Reward
Sprouse made the admission while discussing the financial realities behind the show. “The only residual check I’ve ever received for ‘The Suite Life’ at all was a crossover episode with ‘Hannah Montana’ for five cents. I’m not joking,” he said. He added that this was especially frustrating given the show’s popularity at the time.

Lewis, who played hotel manager Mr. Moseby on the series, explained part of the reason for the low pay. He said the cast signed contracts that allowed the production to film continuously throughout a calendar year. Regardless of how many episodes they filmed, the studio counted everything as a single season. “They called it one season because they didn’t have to pay us bumps,” Lewis said.
Sprouse described the situation as unusual. “In terms of the channel higher-ups, we were also kind of weirdly the ugly duckling,” he said. “We were extremely popular, but also extremely underfunded.”
The Disney Channel Model at the Time
Sprouse also pointed to the broader structure of Disney Channel as a factor. He noted that streaming services did not exist during the show’s run. Viewers could only access content through a limited number of cable channels. Disney Channel, he explained, marketed itself as a safe, advertisement-free environment for young audiences. As a result, the traditional residual model worked very differently for the cast.
“Imagine that,” Sprouse said. “In a time where residuals would have been great. Not a single paycheck for being arguably one of the most popular shows.”
About the Series
The Suite Life of Zack and Cody aired on Disney Channel from 2005 to 2008. The show followed twin brothers Zack and Cody, played by Dylan and Cole Sprouse, as they grew up living in the fictional Tipton Hotel with their single mother. The series ran for three seasons and became one of the network’s most-watched programs during that period.
Its success later led to a spinoff series, The Suite Life on Deck, which aired from 2008 to 2011. The continuation featured several new cast members, including Brenda Song, Debby Ryan and Erin Cardillo, alongside the returning Sprouse twins.
Despite its strong viewership, Sprouse’s comments suggest that the show’s financial rewards for its cast were far smaller than its cultural impact might imply.
