Christa Pike, the Tennessee woman who survived a failed execution last week, is conscious and able to speak, her attorneys confirmed Tuesday. The development marks what her legal team called an “unprecedented” situation in the history of American capital punishment.
Pike’s lawyers, Randy Spivey and Kelly Gleason, released a statement saying she continues to receive medical care following the failed procedure. Two lethal injections of pentobarbital failed to kill her, and the attorneys say she suffered significant injuries to her arms as a result.

Pike Remains Shackled Despite Injuries
Despite her medical condition, Pike remains handcuffed and shackled, according to her legal team. Her attorneys expressed concern about this, noting the serious physical harm she sustained during the execution attempt.
Her prognosis remains unclear. However, Spivey and Gleason said they expect her recovery to be lengthy. “At a minimum, we expect a long recovery,” the attorneys said in their statement.
Legal Team Thanks Medical Staff and Supporters
In their statement, Pike’s attorneys praised the medical team and first responders who treated her after the failed execution. “We are incredibly grateful to the first responders and the medical team at the hospital who treated Christa like a human and have provided exceptional care to her,” Spivey and Gleason said.
The attorneys also acknowledged an outpouring of public support. They said thousands of people from around the world sent messages offering prayers and support for Pike following the failed execution attempt.
Spivey and Gleason confirmed they will hold a news conference on Wednesday. The conference will likely address further details about Pike’s condition and the legal questions surrounding the failed lethal injection procedure. The case has drawn significant attention both nationally and internationally, given the highly unusual circumstances of a condemned prisoner surviving an execution.
