Greenland’s parliament has voted to approve a landmark trilateral security agreement with Denmark and the United States, clearing a major step toward strengthening military cooperation in the Arctic and North Atlantic regions.
Lawmakers Vote in Favour of the Deal
Greenlandic lawmakers backed the agreement 16-0 on Tuesday, with seven abstentions. The vote follows months of pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump, who repeatedly called for the United States to take control of the semiautonomous Arctic island.

The trilateral pact aims to expand the U.S. military presence in Greenland. However, it also preserves Danish sovereignty over the self-governing territory. Notably, the agreement would remain in effect even if Greenland eventually chooses full independence.
What the Security Agreement Covers
The deal opens the door to additional U.S. military bases on Greenland. At the same time, it eases tensions that built up over Trump’s persistent demands for the island to become part of the United States. The agreement balances American security interests with Greenland’s continued status under Danish control.
Trump, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen signed the agreement in September. They did so on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Next Steps for the Agreement
Danish lawmakers are scheduled to debate the deal later this month. According to the agreement’s terms, it will enter into force only after the necessary parliamentary processes of the Kingdom of Denmark, in conjunction with Greenland, are completed.
The Greenlandic vote marks a significant moment in Arctic geopolitics. The security pact reflects growing international focus on the strategic importance of the region, particularly as U.S. interest in Greenland has intensified in recent years.
