Hudson Williams, the Canadian actor best known for his role in the queer hockey romance series Heated Rivalry, is currently writing a new film. However, the project has hit an unexpected creative snag. One of the main characters is a former hockey player, and Williams admits the overlap with his existing hockey work is giving him pause.
A Creative Conflict Williams Cannot Easily Shake
Williams spoke about the new project during an interview with Entertainment Weekly. The interview focused primarily on Yaga, a Canadian witchy detective-thriller in which he stars alongside Carrie-Anne Moss. During the conversation, Moss mentioned her own hesitation about referencing her real-life friend Keanu Reeves and his John Wick franchise within the show. Williams responded by drawing a parallel to his own situation.

“I’m writing a movie right now, but one character is an ex-hockey player,” Williams said. “We were like, ‘But if we have this hockey player and then you’ve done a hockey show…’ We’re getting tripped up on it and we’re considering other sports, but for some reason this character just made way more sense being an ex-hockey player. It’s almost like you have to bust through the prison of your own mind or construct of your own mind.”
Williams did not share further details about the film’s story or genre. Despite the creative tension, he appears committed to the hockey angle. The character, he suggested, simply works better as a former player than as an athlete from any other sport.
A Busy Period for the Rising Actor
Before Heated Rivalry brought him wider recognition, Williams wrote and directed several short films. These include Soakers, Buttons and Inside Augustine Mendoza’s Quotidian Apartment. His background as a filmmaker adds context to his current writing project.
Meanwhile, his acting schedule remains packed. Yaga premiered on October 23. Production on the second season of Heated Rivalry also began in August. In addition, Williams will appear in the dark comedic thriller Apparatus opposite Dylan O’Brien. He also has a role in the ensemble culinary thriller Tyrant, which features Charlize Theron, Julia Garner, Demi Moore and Omar Apollo.
Williams has not confirmed a timeline for the new film. For now, the hockey player character remains at the center of both his creative process and his internal debate.
