Cynthia Erivo brought her signature charm and wit to the opening monologue of Saturday Night Live UK, delivering a crowd-pleasing performance that blended personal revelations with sharp comedy. The acclaimed actress and singer, who is hosting the weekend’s episode, used her time on stage to talk about her famous nails, her love of baking shows, and the one prize she still wants — despite already holding an Emmy, a Grammy, and a Tony Award.
The Award She Still Wants
Erivo is widely recognised as an almost-EGOT, lacking only an Oscar to complete the prestigious set of entertainment awards. However, she told the audience that the accolade she truly craves is something far more British. “That’s right. I’m a huge Bake Off fan,” she said. “It’s an absolute dream of mine to be on that show.”

The award in question is the Hollywood handshake — the coveted gesture of approval from Paul Hollywood, a judge on Channel 4’s The Great British Bake Off, known in the United States as The Great British Baking Show. The series also features Nigella Lawson as a judge, with Noel Fielding and Alison Hammond serving as hosts.
However, Erivo admitted there is one significant obstacle standing between her and that dream. “I can’t cook under time pressure,” she confessed. “I can run a marathon in under four hours, but ask me to bake a cake, well, then I’m screwed.”
The Famous Nails Take Centre Stage
Earlier in the monologue, Erivo addressed the topic she says she gets asked about most — her trademark long nails. She told the audience she has worn them since she was 16. “They’re an extension of my body, an expression of my soul, and surprisingly practical,” she said. “I haven’t had to use cutlery in years.”
She later returned to the subject while imagining herself competing inside the Bake Off tent. The scenario, she suggested, would be nothing short of chaotic. “Making cake batter with one nail, chopping my butter with the other,” she said. “Noel’s telling me I’ve got 30 seconds left, and Alison just keeps laughing. It’s not funny, Hammond. Seriously, what are you laughing at? I’ve got a soggy bottom, and I’m freaking stressed!”
A Surprise Interruption Closes the Monologue
At that moment, comedian Larry Dean appeared on stage dressed as Noel Fielding. He warned Erivo that she had 30 seconds remaining. Slightly panicked, she asked if he meant 30 seconds for the cake.
“No,” Dean replied. “The monologue! You need to get on the show.”
Erivo then launched into a rapid-fire closing, rattling off the evening’s highlights at speed. “Okay, 30 seconds. Music. We have music. Blossoms. They’re great. And sketches. I’m in them, and adverts. I’m not in them. We’ve got an amazing show for you tonight. Stick around and watch this!”
The monologue drew strong audience reaction and set an energetic tone for the rest of the episode. For Erivo, the Saturday Night Live UK hosting slot adds another notable milestone to an already remarkable career — even if the Hollywood handshake remains, for now, just out of reach.
