The White House has asked Kimberly Guilfoyle to step down from her position as United States Ambassador to Greece. White House press secretary Katie Zacharia confirmed the decision at a briefing on Tuesday, October 13.
“We have asked Ambassador Guilfoyle to resign,” Zacharia told reporters. “She has been a wonderful asset to the team, and we wish her well.”

The announcement followed remarks by President Donald Trump on Monday. Trump told reporters he was considering firing Guilfoyle, saying simply: “We’re not happy.”
Allegations Over US Influence in Greece
The move comes after US lawmakers raised concerns about Guilfoyle’s conduct in the role. Lawmakers previously alleged that she may have threatened to use American influence to undermine the Greek government. However, the White House did not directly address those allegations in Tuesday’s statement.
Washington’s embassy in Athens did not immediately respond to a request for comment directed to Guilfoyle.
Greece’s Strategic Importance to the United States
The diplomatic development carries broader significance. Greece is a key NATO ally and provides critical military facilities that help secure the Eastern Mediterranean region. In addition, Greece currently leads a European Union maritime mission aimed at protecting commercial shipping in the Red Sea.
Those strategic ties make the ambassador role particularly important. Therefore, the White House’s decision to remove Guilfoyle draws attention at a sensitive moment in US-Greece relations.
Guilfoyle had been a prominent figure in Trump’s political circle before her appointment. Her departure from the ambassadorship marks a notable shift, especially given the administration’s public acknowledgment of dissatisfaction with her performance.
So far, the White House has not named a replacement or indicated a timeline for filling the position.
