Former NHL executive Brian Burke has made a surprise cameo appearance in I Play Rocky, a new film about the making of the classic 1976 boxing movie Rocky. The film recently premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, drawing significant attention from both film and sports fans alike.

I Play Rocky tells the story of how a young Sylvester Stallone wrote and then starred in the iconic film that launched one of Hollywood’s most beloved franchises. Actor Anthony Ippolito plays Stallone in the production. Director Peter Farrelly leads the project.

Farrelly is best known for his long career as a Hollywood filmmaker. However, his connection to Burke goes back much further than the movie business. The two men are old friends from their time together at Providence College in Rhode Island.
Burke Steps in Front of the Camera
Burke visited the film’s set in New Jersey during production. Farrelly saw an opportunity and decided to place his old friend in a scene alongside Ippolito. As a result, Burke appears briefly on screen opposite the actor portraying Stallone.
While Burke is best known in hockey circles, his cameo in I Play Rocky introduces him to a wider audience. He has held executive roles with several NHL clubs over the years, including the Vancouver Canucks, the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Calgary Flames. In addition, he has worked as a television analyst with Sportsnet.
A Familiar Face at TIFF
The Toronto International Film Festival premiere of I Play Rocky attracted considerable fanfare. Hockey fans attending or following the festival may have done a double-take upon spotting Burke among the cast.
