The Winnipeg Jets dropped their seventh consecutive game on Thursday, falling 6-4 to the Tampa Bay Lightning in a contest that exposed the team’s ongoing defensive struggles. Despite scoring four times against reigning Vezina Trophy winner Andrei Vasilevskiy, the Jets could not contain a Lightning offence that erupted for four goals in the second period alone.
Second Period Collapse Proves Costly
The Jets entered the second period with the game tied. However, Tampa Bay quickly seized control. Strathclair, Manitoba native Conor Geekie opened the scoring in the period, converting a pass from Dominic James on a partial two-on-one. The Lightning then added three more goals in the final five minutes of the frame. Anthony Cirelli scored on the power play, John Carlson finished a one-timer off a Pontus Holmberg pass, and Brandon Hagel capitalised on a Jets turnover in their own zone.

The Jets trailed 5-1 after two periods. Head coach Scott Arniel pointed directly to a three-minute stretch as the turning point. “It’s pretty frustrating,” Arniel said. “Again, a three-minute span in the second period we gave up three goals. We can’t have those brain cramps. We can’t have those situations where you miss an assignment.”
This marks the second straight game in which Winnipeg surrendered three goals within roughly three minutes. The Jets have also allowed the opening goal in each of their last five games.
Third Period Rally Falls Short
Stuart Skinner allowed five goals on 21 shots before Arniel pulled him after two periods. Nico Daws, recently acquired from the New Jersey Devils, made his Jets debut in the third and stopped all nine shots he faced.
The Jets responded with three straight goals in the final frame. Dylan Samberg, Neal Pionk, and Kyle Connor all scored to cut the deficit to one. However, Holmberg sealed the result with an empty-net goal, giving him four points on the night. Cirelli and Hagel each finished with three points for Tampa Bay.
Pionk scored twice in the loss, playing in his 600th NHL game. He had earlier tied the game in the first period with a one-timer from the point. Mark Scheifele recorded three assists after going four straight games without a point. Dawson Mercer also picked up an assist for his first point as a Jet, while Cole Perfetti added two points.
Line Changes and Power Play Woes
Before the game, Arniel shuffled his top two forward lines. He moved Connor to the second unit and promoted Gabriel Vilardi to the top line, separating Connor and Scheifele for the first time this season. The Jets had scored just five goals across their previous four games. Arniel said both players supported the change. “We need more than just one line scoring and they recognize it,” he said.
Connor acknowledged the team’s recent struggles. “We are well aware that we haven’t played our best lately,” he said. “We got to get out of this funk.” He added that the third period showed signs of what the team can do. “Hopefully we can replicate that going forward.”
The Jets’ power play remained a serious concern. They went 0-for-2 on Thursday and are now 0-for-16 on the man advantage over their last six games. Defenceman Neal Pionk summed up the team’s night simply. “Just wasn’t good to start,” he said. “We got to play a full 60 minutes.”
Winnipeg now sits at 4-6-3 on the season. The Jets return to action Friday night when they visit the Florida Panthers, seeking revenge after a 5-1 loss to Florida on Tuesday. Puck drop is scheduled for just after 6 p.m.
