The B.C. Lions staged a dramatic comeback on Saturday, defeating the Saskatchewan Roughriders 33-26 in the CFL West Division semifinal in Vancouver. The victory eliminated the reigning Grey Cup champions from the playoffs and sent the Lions through to the West Division final.
Lions Overcome 14-Point Deficit
B.C. found themselves in serious trouble early. Saskatchewan built a 17-3 lead midway through the second quarter, and the Lions looked outmatched. However, quarterback Nathan Rourke steadily brought his team back into contention through the third quarter before taking full control in the fourth.

Rourke finished the game completing 21 of 32 passes for 366 yards. He threw two touchdown passes to Jevon Cottoy and one to Stanley Berryhill III. Kicker Sean Whyte contributed four field goals, with his longest covering 48 yards.
For Saskatchewan, quarterback Trevor Harris passed for 255 yards but threw one interception. Tommy Stevens added a four-yard rushing touchdown in the second quarter, while kicker Brett Lauther had an impressive night, converting six field goals including two from 55 yards.
How the Game Unfolded
Both teams traded field goals throughout the first quarter. Lauther opened the scoring with a 55-yard kick, and each side then added a 26-yard field goal to make it 6-3 after one frame. Lauther struck again from 55 yards early in the second quarter to extend Saskatchewan’s lead.
A turnover on downs proved costly for B.C. The Riders took possession at their own 49-yard line and drove down the field, with Stevens punching it in from four yards out. Saskatchewan converted the two-point attempt through Harris to Emilus, pushing the lead to 17-3.
Rourke then scrambled from the pocket and launched a deep pass to an open Berryhill, who crossed the goal line to cut the deficit to 17-10. B.C. also had a late first-half interception from defensive back Robert Carter Jr., but they failed to score from it. A dropped pass near the goal line by Keon Hatcher Sr. forced a 48-yard Whyte field goal, and the Lions trailed 17-13 at halftime.
Lauther extended the lead to 20-13 early in the third quarter. B.C. answered quickly when Rourke found Cottoy, who broke through the Saskatchewan defence and sprinted 70 yards for a touchdown to level the score at 20-20. After Lauther’s fifth field goal, Rourke connected with Cottoy again near the end zone for his second major of the game. That gave B.C. a 27-23 lead heading into the fourth.
Lions Hold On for the Win
Both teams exchanged field goals in the final quarter. Whyte’s 34-yard kick stretched the Lions’ lead to seven, and he added another from 24 yards with three minutes remaining. Lauther pulled three points back for Saskatchewan with a 44-yard field goal, making it 33-26. A late Whyte field goal attempt fell short, giving the Riders one final possession, but they stalled at B.C.’s 34-yard line.
The Lions, who shared identical 10-8 regular-season records with Saskatchewan, earned home-field advantage by winning the head-to-head series 2-1. B.C. will next travel to face the Edmonton Elks, who finished 13-5, in the West Division final on November 7. The Grey Cup takes place in Calgary on November 15.
