A last-minute touchdown pass from Dru Brown lifted the Winnipeg Blue Bombers to a dramatic 25-22 victory over the Toronto Argonauts in the CFL East Division semifinal on Saturday at BMO Field.
Brown connected with Nick Demski on a 23-yard scoring strike with just 44 seconds remaining. The play capped a five-play, 52-yard drive and gave Winnipeg the lead for good. Brown then hit Demski again on the two-point conversion to seal the result.

Fumble Recovery Sets Up Winning Drive
The decisive drive began after former Argonaut Thiadric Hansen recovered a fumble by Janarion Grant on a punt return. That turnover gave Winnipeg the field position it needed to mount the comeback.
Brown finished the game 18-of-30 for 206 yards, throwing two touchdowns and two interceptions. Toronto’s Chad Kelly left the field with an apparent right shoulder injury with just over nine minutes remaining. Kelly had completed 18-of-30 passes for 193 yards and a touchdown before exiting. Nick Arbuckle replaced him but managed only 25 yards on two completions from six attempts.
Winnipeg’s touchdowns came from David Reese and Ontaria Wilson. Sergio Castillo added two converts and a field goal. Wilson opened the scoring with a sensational one-handed 32-yard touchdown grab at 2:54 of the first quarter. Reese added a 52-yard fumble return touchdown in the third quarter, pulling Winnipeg to within 19-17 after defensive lineman Michael Fletcher forced a Kelly fumble.
Argonauts Squander Defensive Effort
Toronto’s defence forced four turnovers on the day, including two interceptions and two fumble recoveries. However, the offence converted that pressure into only three field goals. Lirim Hajrullahu booted five field goals and a convert for Toronto, while Tyler Kahmann scored the Argonauts’ lone touchdown.
Hajrullahu’s 41-yard field goal at 2:37 of the fourth quarter gave Toronto a 22-17 lead. That advantage looked secure until a critical decision late in the game. With 2:07 remaining, Toronto chose to punt on third-and-one from its own 45-yard line. That gave Winnipeg possession at its own 24-yard line with 1:54 to play, and Brown made the Argonauts pay.
Bombers Advance as Crossover Team
Winnipeg now advances to the East Final in Montreal next weekend. The Alouettes and Bombers split their regular season series one game apiece.
The Blue Bombers are the 14th crossover team from the West Division to enter the East playoffs since the CFL adopted the format in 1996. Those crossover teams hold a 6-8 all-time record in the East playoffs. Furthermore, none of those teams have ever reached the Grey Cup.
Winnipeg also made the East semifinal last year but fell 42-33 to Montreal. A crowd of 21,786 — a season high at BMO Field — watched Saturday’s contest on a clear fall afternoon. The Blue Bombers will look to go further this time when they face the Alouettes next weekend.
