Comedian Nathan Fielder and filmmaker Lance Oppenheim quietly developed the project for more than three years. The film offers an unflinching look at Holmes during the month before she began serving an 11-year prison sentence for defrauding investors. In addition to a best documentary feature submission at the 99th Academy Awards, A24 plans to submit the film across multiple categories, including best picture, director, cinematography, film editing, sound and original score.
Clayface Holds Firm in Second Place
Just behind the documentary, “Clayface” landed in second place on its second Friday, earning $3.3 million from 3,478 theaters. The DC film has now made $36.9 million domestically, with rival estimates projecting an additional $10.25 million by Sunday.
Directed by James Watkins, “Clayface” centers on a rising movie star named Matt Hagen, played by Tom Rhys Harries, who volunteers for an experimental medical procedure after suffering severe facial disfigurement. The cast also includes Naomi Ackie, David Dencik, Max Minghella and Eddie Marsan.
Wildwood and Wicker Round Out the Top Five
Laika’s stop-motion film “Wildwood” finished third on Friday, grossing $2.39 million from 3,100 theaters. The film features voice performances from Carey Mulligan and Jacob Tremblay, among others. It has now earned $25.2 million domestically through its second weekend and looks to add another $7 to $8 million by Sunday.
Directed by Travis Knight, “Wildwood” follows a teenage girl who enters an enchanted forest to rescue her abducted brother. The film carries a $100 million price tag, and strong critical reviews should continue to support its performance at the box office.
Meanwhile, the concert film “BTS World Tour ‘ARIRANG’ in South America” landed in fourth place, bringing in $2 million from 1,010 theaters. Black Bear’s “Wicker” followed in fifth, earning $1.43 million on its second Friday from 2,374 theaters. The film targets an additional $4.1 million by Sunday, which would bring its cumulative domestic gross to around $17.1 million.
Described as an audacious comedic fable, “Wicker” tells the story of an ostracized fisherwoman, played by Olivia Colman, who commissions a husband from the local basketmaker. Alexander Skarsgård and Peter Dinklage co-star, with Elizabeth Debicki also appearing in the film.
