The Toronto Maple Leafs delivered one of their most complete performances of the season on Saturday, crushing the Edmonton Oilers 7-2 at Rogers Place. William Nylander scored twice, including the 300th goal of his NHL career, as Toronto extended its winning streak to four straight games.
Leafs Continue to Dominate in Edmonton
Toronto has long made Rogers Place a difficult building for Edmonton. Since the Oilers moved into their current arena, the Maple Leafs have posted a remarkable 12-2-1 record there. Saturday’s result only reinforced that trend.

Jack Roslovic, Auston Matthews, Troy Stecher, Zack MacEwen and Vinni Lettieri also scored for Toronto. The Maple Leafs now sit at 7-4-2 on the season. Their four-game winning streak reflects a team firing on all cylinders.
Matthews spoke enthusiastically about the mood inside the locker room. “The energy in the locker room day in and day out has been great,” he said. “It’s competitive, a lot of joking around, a lot of chirping one another. It’s just been a lot of fun, and that energy carries over in the games.” He added that the team-first mentality has been the key driver of their recent success.
Nylander Reaches Career Milestone
Nylander’s 300th career goal carried significant historical weight. He became the fourth-fastest player in Maple Leafs franchise history to reach the milestone. He also ranks as the fourth-fastest Swedish player in NHL history to hit 300 goals. In addition, he surpassed Rick Vaive to move into sixth place on Toronto’s all-time scoring list. Saturday also marked his 45th career multi-goal game, placing him tenth on the franchise’s all-time list.
Meanwhile, Matthews extended his season-opening road point streak to five games. He now needs just one more point to reach 800 for his career. That milestone would make him the fastest player in Maple Leafs history to reach the mark. It would also make him the third-fastest American skater in NHL history to achieve it.
Kirill Marchenko also recorded two assists on the night, extending his own road point streak to five games to open the season.
Goaltending and Special Teams Shine
Goaltender Anthony Stolarz was strong throughout, stopping 30 of 32 shots to earn the win. Toronto’s penalty kill was equally impressive. The Leafs had killed 40 of 41 opposing power plays this season, including 30 in a row, before Edmonton finally converted late in the game.
Matthews credited the full team effort when asked about containing Edmonton’s elite players. Connor McDavid recorded two assists, extending his season-opening points streak to 11 games and 33 points. Leon Draisaitl scored twice for the third consecutive game, giving him a league-leading 12 goals on the season. “You recognize the challenges you’re going up against, and you need everybody to meet that challenge,” Matthews said. “The penalty kill was great, the defence was great, Stolarz was great, and we put the puck in the net when we needed to.”
Head coach Jim Hiller praised the depth of his roster after the win. “It’s not just Matthews. It’s not just Nylander. It’s not just Tavares. It’s going through the lineup, and that gives you a chance to win every night,” Hiller said. “I’m happy for our team that they can feel there’s other guys there to support. That’s a pretty good feeling right now.”
Unlikely Contributors Add to the Effort
Two of Toronto’s goals came from unexpected sources. MacEwen scored his first goal since October 14, 2024. Lettieri, meanwhile, had not scored since April 1, 2025. Both contributions highlighted the depth that Hiller pointed to after the game.
For Edmonton, the loss ended a three-game winning streak. The Oilers dropped to 8-2-1 on the season. Forward Zach Hyman offered a blunt assessment. “They were just better than us,” he said. “They were more competitive and won more battles. They beat us in every area today.”
Toronto’s dominant display in Edmonton further cements their status as one of the early-season stories in the NHL. With their winning streak intact and several players approaching personal milestones, the Maple Leafs appear to be building genuine momentum heading deeper into the season.
