SAG-AFTRA has extended the contract of its national executive director, Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, by four years and added CEO to his official title. The union’s board approved the move on Saturday with an overwhelming 98.34% of the vote in favor.
Crabtree-Ireland’s previous contract ran through 2028. His new agreement now extends to June 20, 2032. The union did not disclose the financial terms of the deal. For the 2026 fiscal year, he earned $1.1 million.

Extension Timed to Cover Key Studio Negotiations
The timing of the extension is significant. SAG-AFTRA’s current deal with the major studios expires in June 2030. The new contract ensures Crabtree-Ireland leads the union through that critical bargaining round.
In a statement, the union said the extension would provide “added stability and continuity for the union during a time of unprecedented industry disruption.” The phrase reflects growing concerns across Hollywood about artificial intelligence and its impact on performers.
Crabtree-Ireland has spent nearly his entire career at SAG-AFTRA. He previously served as the union’s general counsel and chief operating officer. In 2021, the union named him national executive director. He also played a central role in the 2023 actors’ strike, one of the most high-profile labor actions in Hollywood’s recent history.
AI Rights a Central Focus of His Leadership
Under Crabtree-Ireland’s leadership, artificial intelligence has become a defining issue for the union. He has negotiated a series of agreements designed to let performers benefit from AI technology. At the same time, those deals aim to protect members from unauthorized use of their likenesses.
SAG-AFTRA President Sean Astin praised Crabtree-Ireland strongly after the board vote. “To battle giant global transnational corporations, we need expert leadership with a track record of successful bargaining and significant operational management expertise,” Astin said. “That is Duncan.”
Astin also described Crabtree-Ireland as “a powerful executive” who has represented the union at the bargaining table, in Congress, and in boardrooms across the industry and around the world. “We are thrilled to have guaranteed Duncan’s continued service to the members of SAG-AFTRA,” he added.
Crabtree-Ireland Pledges to Protect Members’ Rights
Crabtree-Ireland responded to the renewal with a commitment to continue fighting for performers. “Leading SAG-AFTRA’s staff is the honor of my career,” he said. “As we continue fighting for human creativity, the coming years will be crucial for charting the path forward.”
He also pledged to ensure members retain control over their image, likeness, voice, and workplace destiny. “I intend to fight alongside our leadership to make sure our members are compensated fairly in the process,” he said. He thanked Astin, the national officers, the National Board, and the union’s staff for their support.
The near-unanimous board vote signals strong institutional confidence in Crabtree-Ireland’s direction. His expanded title as CEO also reflects a broader recognition of his role within the organization as it navigates a rapidly changing entertainment landscape.
