A truck driver charged in connection with a crash that killed three people near Foam Lake, Saskatchewan, has been released on bail. Kelly Knopf, 40, a resident of South Carolina, appeared in Yorkton court on Thursday, nearly one week after the fatal collision claimed the lives of a mother and her two young daughters.
Three Lives Lost in Rural Saskatchewan Collision
RCMP say Knopf was driving a truck when he allegedly struck an SUV that was attempting to pass a semi-truck on a rural road. The crash killed 40-year-old Amber Olsen and her two daughters, eight-year-old Isla and five-year-old Everly. A fourth occupant of the SUV survived but arrived at hospital in serious condition. The driver of the semi-truck was not injured.

Knopf and two other passengers from his vehicle also required hospital treatment following the collision. Authorities charged him with dangerous driving causing death and dangerous driving causing bodily harm.
Bail Granted with Strict Conditions
The court granted Knopf bail set at $20,000 on Thursday. As a result, he will be permitted to return to the United States while the case proceeds. However, the court attached several conditions to his release. Among them, Knopf cannot operate a vehicle anywhere in Saskatchewan.
His lawyer, Brian Pfefferle, told the court that Knopf is overwhelmed with grief over the incident. Pfefferle also confirmed that his client had been in Saskatchewan on a hunting trip at the time of the crash. Furthermore, Pfefferle said Knopf intends to fully cooperate with authorities throughout the legal process.
Case to Continue in the New Year
Knopf’s next scheduled court appearance is January 21. The case has drawn significant public attention across Canada following the deaths of Amber Olsen and her two daughters. The collision near Foam Lake took place on a rural road, the kind of two-lane highway where passing maneuvers carry serious risk.
Meanwhile, the community continues to mourn the loss of the Olsen family. The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have not yet indicated whether additional charges may follow as the case moves forward.
