President Donald Trump announced Monday that he and his super PAC will personally fund campaign-style advertisements promoting his administration. The decision marks a significant reversal after bipartisan criticism over the use of federal money to air pro-Trump content.
Trump made the announcement on his Truth Social platform. He framed the decision as a patriotic gesture rather than an admission of wrongdoing. “I have decided to do the Patriotic Ads, among others, and pay for them myself, and with money I raised for MAGA, Inc.,” Trump wrote.

Bipartisan Criticism Prompted the Reversal
Lawmakers from both parties had condemned the taxpayer-funded ads in recent days. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, a Democrat from New York, called the advertisements “propaganda.” Meanwhile, Republican Senator Thom Tillis of North Carolina, who is retiring, compared Trump’s use of government funds for self-promotion to the conduct of former Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.
“There’s no place for that sort of thing,” Tillis said.
The ads portrayed Trump favorably and carried disclaimers stating the U.S. government paid for them. NBC News reported last week that the funding came from money allocated to U.S. Customs and Border Protection. However, senior agency leaders had no involvement in the decision to use those funds.
Millions Already Spent Before the Reversal
Political ad-tracking firm AdImpact estimated the government spent at least $10 million airing the advertisements. A Maryland-based company, LMD Agency, received a $20 million contract for the campaign. Public contracting records listed the purpose as a “national media campaign.”
At least one of the ads was nearly identical to a Trump campaign advertisement from 2024. Critics argued the content crossed the line from public information into political promotion.
A White House official confirmed that MAGA Inc. will cover the cost of future ads. The official also defended the broader practice, stating that administrations from both parties have used public service announcements to explain policy and promote national direction. However, neither the White House nor MAGA Inc. addressed whether the government would receive reimbursement for the ads that have already aired.
Questions Remain Over Past Spending
The White House had previously defended the advertisements as “clearly not political.” Officials described them as reminders for Americans to “love their country and understand what makes it worth defending.” Despite that earlier defense, Trump’s Monday announcement effectively acknowledged the public and political pressure surrounding the spending.
The question of reimbursement for the $10 million already spent remains unanswered. MAGA Inc. did not respond to inquiries on the matter. As scrutiny over the use of taxpayer-funded self-promotional ads continues, the administration has yet to clarify whether any funds will be returned to the federal government.
