A horse in Melfort, Saskatchewan, is expected to make a full recovery after firefighters rescued it from a mud pit where it had been trapped for several hours overnight. The Melfort Fire Department confirmed the rescue, praising the combined effort of first responders and local neighbours.
Horse Trapped Overnight in Mud Pit
Crews received reports of the stuck horse at around 7:34 a.m. on Wednesday. Firefighters believe the animal had been trapped throughout the night and arrived on scene completely exhausted.

The mud pit had left the horse unable to free itself. Its prolonged struggle had drained its energy well before help arrived.
First Rescue Attempt Fails
Firefighters initially tried to lift the horse using a sling and a loader. However, the animal panicked during the attempt and slipped free of the sling, forcing crews to abandon that approach.
The team then changed strategy. Instead of lifting the horse, crews dug a gradual slope into the side of the pit. This gave the exhausted animal a manageable path to follow as rescuers guided and pulled it to safety.
The second attempt succeeded. The horse emerged from the mud and firefighters confirmed it was free from the pit.

The Melfort Fire Department thanked all first responders involved in the rescue. The department also acknowledged neighbouring residents who helped at the scene and loaned equipment to support the operation.
