Investigation continues after Horn Island disappearance
Wells disappeared after traveling with friends to Horn Island, a popular Gulf Coast destination during Independence Day celebrations. He joined a group of former high school friends, all of whom were white. However, he never returned to the mainland with them.
Search teams found his body two days later off the island’s coast. Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter said investigators continue to examine the case. He stated that early interviews suggested Wells chose to remain on the island because he expected another ride.

Family attorney challenges official account
Ben Crump has challenged parts of the sheriff’s timeline. He said another witness claimed Wells intended to leave with his friends on the same boat. That statement directly conflicts with the sheriff’s version of events.
Crump also said someone appeared to delete messages from Wells’ phone. Authorities reportedly recovered the phone and his keys with Wells’ friends. As a result, Crump announced he would inspect the device alongside local prosecutors.
Last week, the local prosecutor agreed to present the completed investigation to a grand jury. Crump welcomed that decision but stressed that every detail must receive careful review. He said the family’s experiences require them to question every aspect of the investigation, including the actions of law enforcement.
Football dreams remembered by coach and supporters
Wells would have celebrated his 19th birthday next month. He played wide receiver for Southwest Mississippi Community College and hoped to earn a place in a top Division I football program.
Coach Les George remembered Wells as an outgoing young man who easily connected with others. He recalled that Wells often stopped by his office simply to talk and spend time with the coaching staff.
Support for Wells’ family has continued to grow nationwide. Actor Tyler Perry helped cover funeral expenses. Former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick helped fund an independent autopsy. Filmmaker Spike Lee also attended a recent news conference to support the family.
National leaders call for transparency
Members of the Congressional Black Caucus have also voiced concern about the investigation. In a joint statement, they called for an independent and transparent review of Wells’ death. They said too many important questions remain unanswered and expressed hope that nationwide support would provide comfort to the family during this difficult period.
