A Canadian woman has died after falling seriously ill during the opening night of the world-renowned Tomorrowland music festival in Boom, Belgium.
The 35-year-old attendee reportedly became unwell Friday evening while on the festival grounds, about 35 kilometers south of Antwerp. Festival spokesperson Debby Wilmsen confirmed the woman received immediate first aid before being transported to Antwerp University Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.
Authorities from the Antwerp Public Prosecutor’s Office have launched an investigation into the incident. No further details about the cause of death have been released. Wilmsen offered condolences on behalf of the festival to the woman’s family, friends, and loved ones.
Tomorrowland, one of the largest electronic music festivals in the world, draws hundreds of thousands of fans annually. This year’s edition is expected to welcome around 400,000 visitors over two weekends: July 18–20 and July 25–27.
The tragedy comes just days after a fire severely damaged the event’s iconic main stage, raising concerns about whether the festival would proceed. Organizers, however, opened the grounds on schedule, and a temporary replacement stage was operational within hours.
