A fire broke out Monday evening at the Halifax Grain Elevator in the city’s south end, triggering a major emergency response that kept firefighters on scene for several hours. Authorities are now investigating the cause of the blaze.
Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency crews received a call at around 7:15 p.m. reporting visible flames at the facility. At its peak, the incident escalated to a three-alarm response, with approximately 20 firefighting and support vehicles deployed to the scene.

Fire Contained to Conveyor and Hopper Infrastructure
Crews managed to contain the fire to the south conveyor system’s dust handling equipment and hopper infrastructure. Halifax Regional Municipality confirmed that the blaze did not spread to surrounding structures, crediting coordinated efforts between fire crews and facility representatives.
However, the operation presented serious challenges. The municipality described it as a “complex incident” due to the nature of grain elevator facilities and the difficulties of fighting fires at significant heights. A vessel was also docked alongside the facility at the time, adding further complication to the response.
Halifax Fire noted on its Facebook page that the fire burned 135 feet above the ground, “presenting significant access and tactical considerations.” To help manage the situation, crews deployed drones to assist with the firefighting operation.
Fire Declared Under Control by Late Evening
After more than three hours of work, firefighters declared the fire under control at around 10:30 p.m. No information about injuries was included in the municipality’s Tuesday release.
The Halifax Grain Elevator fire highlights the unique dangers that industrial facilities pose for emergency responders. Grain elevators carry elevated fire risks because of combustible dust and the structural complexity of their conveyor systems. Fighting such fires at extreme heights adds another layer of difficulty for crews.
As a result, the investigation into what caused the fire will likely focus on the dust handling equipment and hopper infrastructure where the blaze originated. Officials have not yet released further details about the investigation’s timeline or any preliminary findings.
Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency has not announced any additional updates at this time. The municipality is expected to provide further information as the investigation continues.
