Australia police shooting in rural Victoria left two officers dead and another wounded Tuesday, sparking a massive manhunt in Porepunkah. The suspect, heavily armed, remains on the run as police comb the forest.
Deadly Encounter in Porepunkah
The shooting erupted midmorning when 10 armed officers attempted to execute a search warrant at a property. The suspect immediately opened fire, killing a 59-year-old detective and a 35-year-old senior constable. Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Mike Bush said the men were “murdered in cold blood.”
Another detective sustained gunshot wounds and underwent surgery later that day. His injuries are serious but not life-threatening, according to officials.
Manhunt and Public Warnings
The gunman fled into surrounding forest on foot, carrying heavy weapons. Hundreds of officers, helicopters, and police dogs are now scouring the area. Authorities urged residents to stay indoors and warned the public to avoid traveling to Porepunkah. Public buildings and the town’s airfield closed. A school with just over 100 students went into lockdown for hours before releasing children safely.
Search for Suspect’s Family
Police have not released the suspect’s name or motive. They also confirmed they are seeking the man’s wife and two children, whose whereabouts remain unknown. Officers continue to treat the situation as highly dangerous.
Rare and Shocking Violence
The Australia police shooting shocked the tight-knit community. “Police stations have fallen silent in Victoria,” said Police Association Secretary Wayne Gatt, describing the force’s grief.
Australia rarely sees deadly police shootings. The last occurred in 2023 in South Australia, while in 2022 two officers were killed by extremists in Queensland. Australia’s strict gun laws, passed after the 1996 Port Arthur massacre that killed 35, have largely reduced firearm violence nationwide.
Community in Mourning
Porepunkah, known for vineyards and alpine scenery, is now the focus of national headlines. Police vow to continue the search until the suspect is captured.
