A Career Spanning Nearly Five Decades
Riehle built a remarkable career over almost 50 years in Hollywood. He appeared in a wide range of film and television productions, frequently playing authority figures such as police officers, prison guards and military personnel. However, he also demonstrated a natural gift for comedy throughout his career.
His film credits included a quartermaster role in the Civil War drama Glory, a prison guard in The Fugitive and an air marshal in Executive Decision. On television, he guest-starred as a police officer on The West Wing and played a principal in the TV adaptation of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. In 2017, The AV Club noted that “if a casting director has found themselves in need of a burly, blustery, mustachioed man for their project, Richard Riehle has likely been near the top of their list.”
Riehle also appeared in Woody Allen’s comedy-mystery Shadows and Fog, the action film Black Rain with Michael Douglas, the hit comedy Bridesmaids and the sitcom Grounded for Life. In addition, he had a particular connection to the Star Trek universe. He landed roles in three separate franchises — Star Trek: The Next Generation in 1992, Star Trek: Voyager in 2000 and Star Trek: Enterprise in 2004.
From Notre Dame to Broadway
Riehle discovered acting almost by accident during his senior year at the University of Notre Dame. Unable to afford another full year of study, he learned he could complete all his required credits in speech and drama within a single semester. He chose to stay.
“I spent a semester doing anything and everything that you do in the theater — acting, directing, building sets, etc. — and then for some reason they liked what I did enough that they got me a teaching assistantship at the University of Minnesota,” he told The AV Club. He went on to earn a Master of Fine Arts degree. “I figured, ‘What the heck? If they’re gonna pay me to do it, I’m gonna do it!'”
Riehle made his film debut in the 1977 movie Joyride, appearing alongside Desi Arnaz Jr., Anne Lockhart, Robert Carradine and Melanie Griffith. He also performed on Broadway three times, including a 1999 revival of The Iceman Cometh alongside Paul Giamatti.
Remembered for Kindness and Generosity
Among his most beloved performances was his portrayal of Tom Smykowski in Office Space. The character, a desperate and expendable employee at the fictional company Initech, became iconic for his plea: “I have people skills!” The role earned Riehle lasting affection from audiences and fellow industry professionals alike.
Beyond his work on screen and stage, those who knew him remembered Riehle as a generous and supportive figure within the entertainment community. Wright Entertainment noted that he consistently encouraged and supported emerging actors and filmmakers at every opportunity.
“Beyond his immense talent, he will be remembered for his genuine goodness, boundless kindness, and unwavering generosity,” the agency said.
