Former President Barack Obama has publicly condemned the federal raid on Representative Ilhan Omar’s home. He called the raid a deliberate attempt by the Trump administration to silence a political critic. Obama argued that the government was using its full power against a law-abiding elected official. He stated this happened simply because she spoke out against the president.
“The full weight of the federal government is being brought down on a law-abiding elected official,” Obama wrote on X. “She has dared to criticize the president.”

Federal Agents Raid Omar’s Home
Federal agents searched Omar’s Washington home last week as part of an ongoing investigation into the Minnesota congresswoman. The timing raised immediate concern among Justice Department veterans. The search occurred during a federal holiday and fell close to the midterm elections.
According to a person familiar with the investigation, federal officials have cited possible charges including conspiracy and making false statements in immigration paperwork. However, the Justice Department has not publicly released any evidence against Omar.
Omar, a Democrat who was born in Somalia and naturalized as a U.S. citizen at age 17, has been one of Trump’s most vocal critics. She directly tied the raid to the president, describing it as “an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement.” She also wrote on X: “For ten years, Trump has targeted me with baseless lies and smear campaigns. This is just the latest escalation in his campaign of political intimidation.”
Deportation Effort Draws Obama’s Criticism
Obama also challenged the administration’s reported efforts to deport Omar. He described the legal theory behind those efforts as unsubstantiated. Officials appear to argue that Omar was actually 18 when her father was naturalized, which would mean she did not automatically gain citizenship at that time.
“Now the Administration is actively trying to deport Congresswoman Omar, seemingly based solely on the unsubstantiated theory that she was actually 18 when her father was naturalized, and therefore is not a citizen,” Obama wrote. He added that agents had raided her home, confiscated personal records and seized her phone in an attempt to find evidence from more than 20 years ago.
Trump, meanwhile, denied personal involvement in the raid last week. He told reporters the search had “nothing to do” with him and said it was “really up to the DOJ.” At the same time, he called Omar “a terrible person.” At a recent rally, Trump attacked Omar and Somali immigrants, prompting chants of “deport” from the crowd. Earlier this year, Trump wrote on Truth Social that he would like to see Omar sent back to Somalia.
Obama Warns of a Dangerous Precedent
Obama’s statement was notably lengthy and direct. He has generally been selective about speaking out since leaving office nearly a decade ago. In this case, he described Omar as “one of the Trump administration’s fiercest critics” and linked the investigation to Trump’s broader pattern of targeting people he believes do not belong in the country.
Obama warned that the administration’s actions set a troubling precedent for American democracy. He argued that all Americans should be alarmed, regardless of their views on Omar’s politics.
“The fact that any president, or any administration, is willing to engage in such transparent efforts to intimidate someone should outrage all Americans, regardless of how they feel about Congresswoman Omar’s political views,” Obama wrote. “Because if this becomes the new normal, there’s no reason to believe it will stop with her — or that future presidents, in either party, won’t do the same.”
Furthermore, Obama compared the Trump administration’s treatment of Omar to its actions against other perceived political opponents. He cited New York Attorney General Letitia James, former FBI Director James Comey and members of the Federal Reserve Board as additional examples of individuals targeted by the administration.
