Country music star Zach Bryan made a pointed political statement at Gillette Stadium on Friday night, wearing a black cutoff T-shirt printed with the words “Free Palestine” in white letters during his concert near Boston. The moment drew widespread attention on social media. It also came weeks after the stadium’s owner, billionaire Robert Kraft, faced accusations of pressuring Ed Sheeran to remove a pro-Palestinian opening act from his tour.
Bryan, 30, performed at the stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, as part of his ongoing tour. Videos of him wearing the shirt spread quickly across multiple social media platforms. Kraft, who owns the New England Patriots, is a well-known and outspoken supporter of Israel.

The Macklemore Controversy
Last month, rapper Macklemore publicly claimed that Kraft had him removed from Ed Sheeran’s tour. Macklemore said the removal came after he voiced support for Palestinians at shows in New Jersey. Kraft did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the matter.
Kraft later said he did not intend to suppress pro-Palestinian expression. Instead, he said his goal was to maintain a “welcoming environment” at Gillette Stadium during Sheeran’s performances. However, his explanation did not prevent further fallout.
Following Macklemore’s removal, several other opening acts on Sheeran’s tour withdrew in protest. Aaron Rowe, Lukas Graham, Finneas, and the house band Beoga all stepped away from the tour in solidarity. Sheeran himself later apologized for how he handled the situation at his first show after the story broke publicly.
“I’ve never wanted to be an activist musician,” Sheeran said, “but this has put me in the middle of an important and passionate argument about freedom of speech and the most complex political issue on the planet.”
Macklemore Announces Free Palestine Tour
Last week, Macklemore announced a Free Palestine Tour scheduled for this fall. Gillette Stadium will not appear on the tour’s list of stops. The announcement added another layer of significance to Bryan’s decision to wear the shirt at the same venue.
The Israeli-Palestinian conflict has long been a flashpoint in popular culture. Differences over Israel’s war in Gaza have reached into local political contests and even cultural institutions. The Costume Institute exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art recently became part of that broader debate.
According to local health authorities in Gaza, Israel’s military campaign there has killed more than 70,000 people. The war followed the Hamas attacks on Israel on October 7, 2023, in which more than 1,200 people lost their lives.
About Zach Bryan
Bryan is best known for hit songs including “Something in the Orange,” “Pink Skies,” and “I Remember Everything,” which features Kacey Musgraves. The Grammy-winning artist served in the U.S. Navy for several years. During that time, he continued writing and recording music before eventually pursuing a full-time music career.
His decision to wear the Free Palestine shirt at Gillette Stadium places him among a growing number of musicians who have publicly taken a position on the conflict. The gesture carries added weight given the venue’s recent history and its owner’s well-documented stance on the issue.
