Niagara Falls Tourism has published an open letter in the Buffalo News, inviting Americans to cross the border this Saturday for a fireworks display over Niagara Falls. The fireworks will light up the sky in red, white and blue — the official colours of the Buffalo Bills NFL team. The gesture reflects the warm relationship between Ontario’s Niagara Region and Buffalo, New York, even as Canada and the United States remain locked in a trade dispute.
A Message of Neighbourly Goodwill
The open letter thanks Buffalo for “being a neighbour.” It highlights the long history the two communities share along the river. The letter also points to several recent moments of cross-border camaraderie that have captured public attention on both sides.

One of those moments came on September 17, when many Buffalo fans stood and sang O Canada during the Bills’ home opener. The letter notes that Canadians joined in “from the stadium, in sports bars, and on couches across the country.” The shared moment clearly left a strong impression on both communities.
Later, Buffalo responded by placing billboards across southern Ontario. The billboards referenced O Canada with the message, “We’re still singing it.” The Niagara Falls Tourism letter directly acknowledges that gesture, stating, “Well, we want to return the feeling.”
A Pattern of Cross-Border Solidarity
This latest exchange is not an isolated event. A similar dynamic emerged earlier this year during the NHL playoffs, when many hockey fans in the Niagara Region cheered for the Buffalo Sabres. The cross-border support drew widespread attention at the time.
St. Catharines city councillor Kevin Townsend spoke about the bond during the spring. He described a “lifelong friendship” between Upstate New Yorkers and Niagara Region residents. He made those remarks even as trade tensions between Canada and the United States continued to escalate.
The open letter and the planned fireworks display show that sports continue to play a central role in keeping that friendship alive. Despite ongoing political and economic friction between the two countries, the Niagara Region and Buffalo appear determined to maintain their neighbourly ties. The Saturday fireworks event offers both communities another opportunity to celebrate what they share rather than what divides them.
