Israel has launched a fresh wave of airstrikes across Gaza, marking its most intense military action in the region since a ceasefire took effect in January. Defense Minister Israel Katz vowed that operations would continue until all hostages held by Hamas were released, warning that failure to do so would bring severe consequences for the group.
The overnight bombardment killed at least 44 people, according to Gaza’s Ministry of Health. The Israeli military confirmed the attacks, stating they were targeting Hamas positions after weeks of unsuccessful negotiations to extend the ceasefire.
Tensions Rise Amid Stalled Negotiations
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defended the renewed offensive, citing Hamas’ refusal to release the remaining hostages or agree to proposed terms put forth by international mediators, including the U.S.
“This escalation comes after Hamas repeatedly rejected proposals from American and Qatari mediators,” Netanyahu’s office stated.
Hamas official Taher Nunu condemned the attacks, urging the international community to take action against what he called continued Israeli aggression.
Ceasefire Unravels as Hostage Talks Collapse
The previous ceasefire, in place for two months, had facilitated the release of dozens of hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners. However, a second phase of the agreement—aimed at securing the release of roughly 60 remaining hostages and ending hostilities—failed to materialize.
In response to stalled negotiations, Netanyahu had already imposed a blockade on aid deliveries to Gaza earlier this month, a move widely criticized by humanitarian organizations.
The war, which began on October 7, 2023, after a Hamas-led attack on Israel killed 1,200 people and saw 250 others taken hostage, has left Gaza in devastation. According to health officials in the region, over 48,000 Palestinians have died in the conflict. The humanitarian situation remains dire, with much of Gaza’s infrastructure in ruins and no clear path to rebuilding.
Regional Impact: Strikes in Syria and Lebanon
The renewed violence has also spilled over into neighboring regions. Israel conducted airstrikes in southern Syria, targeting what it called military installations linked to former Syrian regime forces. Meanwhile, in Lebanon, Israeli strikes reportedly killed two Hezbollah operatives in the southern town of Yohmor, escalating tensions despite a fragile ceasefire between the two sides.
With ceasefire negotiations at an impasse and military operations expanding, the possibility of a broader conflict looms large.
