Ryan Nugent-Hopkins delivered the decisive shootout goal on Thursday night, lifting the Edmonton Oilers to a 6-5 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes. The win extended Edmonton’s winning streak to three games and gave the team seven wins from their last eight outings, pushing their record to 8-1-1.
Draisaitl and McDavid Dominate for Edmonton
Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid each recorded two goals and three assists in the game. Their combined dominance drove Edmonton’s offensive output throughout the night. Nugent-Hopkins also contributed an assist alongside his regulation goal and his shootout winner.

Oilers goaltender Devon Levi turned aside 22 shots to help secure the result. Meanwhile, Carolina’s Brandon Bussi finished with 16 saves in a losing effort.
The Hurricanes received goals from Jackson Blake, Sebastian Aho, Seth Jarvis, Logan Stankhoven and Juuso Valimaki. However, the reigning Stanley Cup champions have now dropped two of their last three games, finishing the night with an 8-2-2 record.
Late Tying Goal Sets Up Dramatic Finish
Edmonton forced overtime with a dramatic late equalizer. With 1:28 remaining and their goalie pulled, McDavid fired a shot that deflected off Jesperi Kotkaniemi’s skate and into the net. The goal was McDavid’s eighth of the season and kept the Oilers alive heading into overtime.
After neither team scored in overtime, Nugent-Hopkins clinched the win in the shootout. His performance was especially meaningful as it marked his return from a lower-body injury he sustained during training camp.
Milestone Moments for McDavid and Nugent-Hopkins
McDavid continued his historic start to the season. He extended his league-leading point total to 31 in just 10 games, recording points in every game this season. As a result, he joined Mario Lemieux, Mike Bossy and Wayne Gretzky as the only NHL players to reach 30 points within the first 10 games of a season.
Nugent-Hopkins also reached a personal milestone on Thursday. The 33-year-old played his 16th season with the Oilers, making him the franchise leader for most seasons played in an Edmonton uniform. In addition, Jarvis scored in his season debut for Carolina after missing time following off-season shoulder surgery. The 24-year-old has scored more than 30 goals in each of the past three seasons.
What’s Next for Both Teams
The Hurricanes will wrap up a five-game road trip when they visit St. Louis on Saturday. The Oilers, meanwhile, continue their homestand on Saturday against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
