The Edmonton Oilers ended a two-game losing streak on Wednesday with a dominant 4-0 shutout victory over the Calgary Flames. Goaltender Tristan Jarry stopped 24 shots to earn the clean sheet, while four different Oilers forwards found the back of the net in a convincing rivalry win.
Oilers Offense Fires on All Cylinders
Mathieu Joseph, Mattias Ekholm, Kasperi Kapanen and Alex Formenton each scored for Edmonton. Connor McDavid and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins both contributed two assists apiece. With the win, the Oilers improved their record to 9-2-2 and finished their five-game road trip with a strong 3-1-1 mark.

The key moment came early in the third period. Just 55 seconds in, McDavid set up Kapanen on the power play to make it 3-0. A sharp passing sequence led to the goal, Kapanen’s fourth of the season.
Edmonton’s situational play continues to stand out. The Oilers are now 7-0-1 when they score first and a perfect 7-0 when leading after two periods. Those numbers reflect a team that controls games once it establishes an early advantage.
McDavid Sets New NHL Record
McDavid’s two assists extended his points streak to all 13 games to start the season. He now leads the entire league with 36 points. Moreover, his assist streak also reached 13 games, setting a new NHL record for the longest campaign-opening assists streak in league history. He surpassed previous marks held by Sebastian Aho, Ken Linseman and Wayne Gretzky.
Flames Lose Cooley to Injury
Calgary’s night took an early difficult turn. Goaltender Devin Cooley left the game late in the first period after Oilers forward Colton Dach collided with him in the crease. Cooley did not return for the second period. He had recorded only eight saves before the injury.
Dustin Wolf stepped in to replace Cooley and finished with 20 saves. However, the damage was already done. The loss ended Calgary’s four-game winning streak and dropped the Flames to 5-7-0 on the season. The timing was particularly unfortunate for Cooley, who had been in excellent form. He entered Wednesday’s game having won four straight starts, posting a 1.50 goals-against average and a .955 save percentage during that run.
In contrast to Edmonton’s strong situational record, Calgary struggled badly in similar situations. The Flames are now 1-6 when their opponent scores first and 0-5 when trailing after the second period.
What’s Next for Both Teams
Calgary returns home on Friday to face the Seattle Kraken. Meanwhile, Edmonton begins a three-game road trip on Saturday when the Oilers visit the New York Islanders.
Both teams will look to reset quickly. For the Flames, the priority will be assessing Cooley’s health before Friday’s game. For the Oilers, the challenge is maintaining momentum as they head into another stretch away from home.
