An armed intruder entered the Malibu, California property of former Vice President Kamala Harris on Friday night before security personnel stopped him from reaching the house. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department confirmed the incident, and a spokesperson for Harris provided additional details the following day.
Eduardo Negrón, a spokesperson for Harris, said neither Harris nor her husband, Doug Emhoff, were present at the time. “Vice President Harris and Second Gentleman Emhoff were not present. They are grateful to the security and law enforcement personnel who responded swiftly,” Negrón said.

Deputies Respond to Late-Night Call
Malibu Lost Hills Sheriff’s deputies arrived at the residence at 10:30 p.m. Friday after receiving a suspicious person call. Upon arrival, deputies made contact with the private security detail already on the property.
According to the Sheriff’s Department, the individual was outside the property when deputies arrived. Deputies warned him to leave the premises, and he did so voluntarily without incident. No arrests were made, though authorities filed a trespassing report.
As a precaution, the Malibu Lost Hills Sheriff’s Department said it would increase patrols in the area. TMZ first reported the incident.
No Secret Service Protection in Place
The security breach raises fresh concerns about Harris’s personal safety. President Donald Trump revoked her Secret Service protection last year, leaving her reliant on private security.
A senior White House official confirmed the decision last August. The official noted that former vice presidents typically receive only six months of Secret Service protection after leaving office.
That standard comes from a law Congress passed in 2008. The legislation authorized Secret Service protection for former vice presidents, their spouses, and their children under 16 for up to six months after leaving office. However, then-President Joe Biden signed a memorandum in January 2025 extending Harris’s protection to 18 months. Trump’s decision effectively ended that extended coverage before the 18-month period concluded.
Security Concerns Remain
Friday’s incident highlights the risks Harris faces without federal protection. Private security personnel played a key role in intercepting the intruder before the situation escalated.
The trespassing report filed by deputies will remain on record. Meanwhile, increased patrols around the Malibu property aim to deter any further security threats in the area.
Harris’s office has not issued any further statement beyond Negrón’s initial comments expressing gratitude to those who responded quickly to the incident.
