Transgender rights advocates gathered in Ottawa this week to call on the federal government to launch a formal inquiry into provincial laws they say are causing serious harm to transgender people across Canada.
The groups told members of Parliament that legislation in Saskatchewan and Alberta has escalated harassment, bullying and mental health crises among transgender youth. Advocates also stated that some individuals have died by suicide since these laws came into effect.

What the Provincial Laws Say
Both Saskatchewan and Alberta require parental consent before students under 16 can change their names or pronouns at school. Alberta goes further, banning transgender athletes aged 12 and older from competing in amateur female sports. The province also restricts access to gender-affirming medical care for young people.
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith and Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe both invoked the notwithstanding clause to protect their laws from legal challenges in court. The notwithstanding clause allows governments to override certain Charter rights for a limited period.
Governments Defend Their Positions
Both premiers frame their school policies as a matter of parental rights. Smith’s government, meanwhile, argues that the sports ban protects female athletes. Officials also say the restrictions on gender-affirming care prevent young people from making hasty, life-altering decisions.
However, LGBTQ+ advocates strongly reject those justifications. They argue the laws have instead created dangerous conditions for transgender youth. As a result, they are pressing federal lawmakers to hear directly from those affected by the policies.
Advocates Push for Federal Action
