The Buffalo Bills officially opened their new $2.1 billion Highmark Stadium on Thursday night, welcoming the Detroit Lions in a highly anticipated regular-season debut filled with fireworks, national anthems, and an electric crowd in Orchard Park, New York.
Toronto rock group Barenaked Ladies kicked off the pregame ceremonies by performing “O Canada” to a loud and enthusiastic reception. Hawaiian-born actress and singer Auli’i Cravalho followed with a performance of “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Buffalo’s status as a border city inspired the dual-anthem tribute, with both the American and Canadian flags displayed on the field during the ceremonies. U.S. pop group OneRepublic was scheduled to perform at halftime.

A Memorable Opening Night
Fireworks lit up the sky roughly 90 minutes before kickoff and again during the opening ceremonies. Fans unfurled three large banners featuring the words “Bills” and “Mafia,” along with a logo marking the stadium’s inaugural season. An elaborate light show followed, with fans wearing synchronized blinking bracelets. Another fireworks display accompanied the introduction of the Bills’ offensive starters.
Quarterback Josh Allen received the loudest welcome, greeted by thunderous chants of “M-V-P! M-V-P!” Allen then delivered early, capping a 10-play, 85-yard opening drive with a 1-yard touchdown run just six minutes into the game.
New Turf Draws Attention
The Bills also rolled out a freshly resodded field ahead of the opener. The team replaced the original turf ahead of schedule after it showed significant wear during two preseason games and two practices. Workers had to fill large divots repeatedly, prompting the decision to resod the entire field following the preseason finale against Pittsburgh on August 27.
After practicing in the stadium on Tuesday, Bills players noted the new grass felt firmer and contained a larger sand infill. That was evident during pregame warmups, when players making hard cuts sent clumps of sand into the air. During the opening drive, an on-field official also had to tamp down a patch of grass that came loose near the 30-yard line.
The field also received its first paint job, with the word “BILLS” appearing in large white block letters across both end zones over red-painted grass. The team’s charging Buffalo logo now sits at midfield.
A Smaller but More Intimate Venue
The new Highmark Stadium holds just over 60,000 fans. That is roughly 12,000 fewer seats than the old facility, which now sits in rubble directly across the street. However, the new design prioritizes proximity over capacity. The seating structure rises more vertically, placing fans closer to the action on the field. A canopy over the stands also helps direct crowd noise downward onto the playing surface.
Bills fans wasted no time embracing the new venue. Many arrived two or three days before the game, and a private parking lot was nearly full of RVs by Tuesday. Long lines formed outside the gates well before they opened, and a light drizzle did nothing to dampen the enthusiasm of the crowd.
