Children shielded friends from gunfire
Inside the church, chaos erupted as rifle blasts shattered stained-glass windows. Students dove into pews, shielding one another. Twelve-year-old Lydia Kaiser suffered injuries while protecting her younger classmate. Her father, a gym teacher, helped escort children to safety.
Another student, 13-year-old Endre, asked doctors to pray with him before surgery. His aunt said the medical team found his faith inspiring. Doctors confirmed his recovery had begun after successful emergency procedures.
Parents rushed to save children
Some parents carried injured children out of the church before ambulances arrived. One father described the first terrifying seconds as “minutes of confusion.” He credited church leaders for directing children to duck and stay low.
Tragedy struck close for a pediatric nurse at Hennepin Healthcare. She was treating victims when she discovered her 12-year-old daughter, Sophia, was among the wounded. Sophia underwent emergency surgery and remains in critical condition.
Families remember the victims
The father of 8-year-old Fletcher Merkel urged others to remember his son’s love for family, fishing, and cooking. Fletcher’s parents asked the public not to define him by the shooting.
The parents of 10-year-old Harper Moyski said they want her death to inspire change. They called for action on gun violence and mental health issues, stressing, “Change is possible and necessary.”
Shooter’s motives and weapons
Police identified the shooter as 23-year-old Robin Westman, a former student. Westman fired 116 rounds with a semiautomatic rifle, also carrying a pistol and shotgun.
Authorities said Westman expressed hate toward “almost every group imaginable” in writings and videos. He left behind a note admitting long-term plans to commit violence while struggling with depression.
