NEW YORK — Nearly two years after announcing their separation, Deborra-Lee Furness has officially filed for divorce from Hugh Jackman, marking the formal end of a nearly three-decade-long marriage to one of Hollywood’s most beloved actors.
Furness, 69, submitted the paperwork in New York on May 23, citing an uncontested filing that now only awaits judicial approval to be finalized. Alongside the divorce documents, her legal team also filed motions related to family health-care coverage, according to Entertainment Weekly.
In a candid and heartfelt statement shared with the Daily Mail, the Australian actress and producer opened up for the first time since the split, speaking of heartbreak, healing, and the search for deeper meaning through adversity.
“It’s a profound wound that cuts deep,” Furness said. “However, I believe in a higher power… always working for us.”
Acknowledging the emotional toll of the separation, she described the experience as one of spiritual growth, calling it “liberation and freedom” to return to one’s true self and values.
“Even when we are presented with apparent adversity, it is leading us to our greatest good,” she continued. “None of this is personal… we are all on our individual journeys.”
She added, “We invite people into our lives to learn the lessons we need — to heal the broken parts of ourselves. I remain grateful.”
An End to a Hollywood Love Story
Furness and Jackman, 56, were married in 1996 and share two children: Oscar, 24, and Ava, 19. They announced their amicable separation in September 2023, stating the decision was made to allow each to pursue “individual growth” while maintaining their family as their “highest priority.”
In a joint statement at the time, the couple expressed gratitude for the life they built together, saying:
“We have been blessed to share almost three decades together as husband and wife in a wonderful, loving marriage. Our journey now is shifting.”
New Rumors, New Realities
In the months since the separation, Jackman has been linked romantically to Sutton Foster, his co-star in the 2022 Broadway revival of The Music Man. The two appeared together publicly at the 75th Annual Tony Awards in June 2022, fueling speculation about their off-stage chemistry.
Neither Jackman nor Foster has publicly commented on the rumors, and Jackman has remained largely silent on the divorce proceedings.
A Quiet Close to a Public Chapter
Though the legal process is still underway, the tone of both Furness and Jackman remains one of dignity and mutual respect. As the divorce nears finalization, Furness’s message offers a reminder that even the most painful endings can serve as a path to personal growth.
“Living within your own integrity, values, and boundaries… that is liberation,” she concluded.
The final step is now in the hands of a judge — but emotionally, both have already begun the next chapter.
