Summer clothing and footwear follow the same pattern, with Porwal noting that popular sizes, colors and styles tend to sell out fast.

Mattresses, furniture and major appliances are the traditional centerpiece of Labor Day sales. Stephanie Carls, a retail insights expert at RetailMeNot, explains that retailers use multi-day holiday weekends to give shoppers time to compare options and make confident decisions on expensive purchases. Many retailers sweeten the deal further with free delivery and installation. Porwal adds that buying in these categories this weekend carries extra urgency in 2026, as he expects prices to rise before year-end due to ongoing economic pressures.
Among specific products drawing strong interest, the Brooks Ghost Max running and walking shoe is available at a notable discount. The shoe carries the American Podiatric Medical Association’s Seal of Acceptance and features a curved outsole designed to smooth heel-to-toe transitions. Shark’s cordless vacuum, rated 4.2 stars by more than 16,000 Amazon customers, is another standout, offering LED headlights, automatic floor-sensing technology and 40 minutes of runtime per charge. The Waterpik Cordless Advanced Portable Water Flosser, a winner of a NBC Selected Wellness Award and holder of the American Dental Association’s Seal of Acceptance, is also discounted, offering three pressure settings and four interchangeable tips on a charge that lasts approximately four weeks.

Not every category deserves a place in your cart this weekend. Carls advises shoppers to hold off on most consumer electronics. TVs, gaming consoles, smart home devices, earbuds and Bluetooth speakers typically reach their lowest prices of the year during Black Friday and Cyber Monday. The one exception she flags is laptops. Rising memory costs are putting upward pressure on notebook prices, and a strong Labor Day deal on a specific model may not be matched in November.
Toys and fall or winter clothing are also worth skipping for now. Toy discounts intensify closer to the holiday season, while retailers have just introduced their autumn and winter collections and have little incentive to reduce prices yet. Porwal recommends waiting until October and November sales for denim, boots, coats and sweaters.

Savings experts agree that stacking discounts is the most effective strategy. Ashley Feinstein Gerstley, a shopping and savings expert at Rakuten, recommends treating the sale price as a starting point rather than a final figure. Comparing prices across multiple retailers before committing to a purchase is equally important. With so many stores competing for attention simultaneously, Porwal notes that one retailer may undercut another or add extras like free shipping or haul-away services. Carls also encourages shoppers to ask about price matching directly — retailers eager for a sale are often willing to negotiate.
The question of shopping online versus in-store comes down to priorities. Online shopping makes price comparison and coupon stacking easier, while visiting a store allows shoppers to test furniture, mattresses and appliances in person. Carls also points out that in-store associates may offer access to discounted floor models or open-box inventory that never appears online. For large items requiring delivery, shoppers should factor shipping fees into the total cost before deciding where to buy.

Most Labor Day sales are already live and will run through Monday, September 7, 2026. Carls urges shoppers not to wait until the final day. Summer clearance stock is already running low on popular sizes and configurations, meaning the specific item a shopper wants may disappear before the promotion ends.
Among the broader sale highlights currently active: Amazon is offering up to 60% off sitewide through September 7, Wayfair is discounting up to 70% sitewide, and Williams Sonoma has up to 75% off clearance kitchen products. In mattresses and bedding, Purple is offering up to $1,199 off a mattress and base through September 15, while Brooklinen has up to 75% off bedding and pillows. For clothing, Billy Reid has up to 75% off sitewide through September 9, Frame is offering up to 70% off through September 7, and Lululemon’s We Made Too Much sale includes up to 60% off select styles.
In the appliance and home category, Home Depot has up to 60% off appliances, tools, grills and furniture through September 9, while Roborock is offering up to $1,600 off through September 6. Travel deals include Calpak at up to 50% off select luggage and Samsonite at up to 40% off plus an additional 10% with code EXTRA10. For beauty, L’ange has up to 60% off hair tools through September 8, and It’s a 10 Haircare is offering up to 50% off sitewide through September 7.
According to RetailMeNot survey data, 73% of shoppers plan to browse online or visit stores this Labor Day weekend, with groceries ranking as the top spending category — a reflection of continued cost-of-living pressure. While grocery-specific Labor Day promotions are limited, bulk non-perishable items occasionally appear at a discount and are worth picking up when found. For most other categories, the advice from experts is consistent: focus on summer clearance, mattresses, furniture and appliances, act quickly on items you want, and hold off on tech and seasonal fashion until later in the year.
