HBO’s Lanterns could return for a second season, but the decision depends entirely on whether writers can craft a story worthy of the first. DC Studios co-chief Peter Safran confirmed that a renewal announcement should come before the end of the year, though he stopped short of giving a specific date.
Story Quality Will Decide the Fate of Season 2
Safran made the comments in a recent interview with Collider. He made clear that creative standards, not just ratings, will drive the decision. “If we’re able to come up with what we believe to be a worthy successor to a beloved and great first season, that’s what’s going to dictate whether there’s a second season,” he said.

He also reflected on what made Season 1’s success meaningful. For Safran, the most rewarding outcome has been seeing the Green Lantern property re-enter mainstream cultural conversation. Lanterns draws from DC Comics’ Green Lantern franchise, which centers on an intergalactic police force.
Season Finale Wraps Up Major Story Threads
The eight-episode first season concluded on October 4. The finale resolved the central mystery surrounding the death of Hal Jordan, played by Kyle Chandler. It also revealed the identity of the second Manhunter and showed how John Stewart, portrayed by Aaron Pierre, becomes Earth’s sole Green Lantern ahead of DC Studios’ upcoming film Man of Tomorrow.
The finale arrived after a strong run for the series. Before the final episode aired, Variety reported that the seventh episode drew 7 million viewers in the United States within its first three days of availability. Earlier episodes had averaged more than 12 million viewers per episode domestically. When international audiences were included, that figure climbed to nearly 19 million viewers per episode.
A Renewal Decision Expected Soon
HBO has not yet officially renewed Lanterns for a second season. However, Safran’s comments suggest the network and DC Studios are actively developing potential storylines. The writers’ room appears to be the next key step. If the creative team delivers a compelling concept, a renewal looks likely before the year ends.
The show’s strong viewership numbers give it a solid foundation. Meanwhile, the cultural momentum behind the Green Lantern revival adds further incentive for the studio to continue the story.
