Olivia Rodrigo and Chappell Roan have teamed up for a retro-themed music video for the “Expectations” remix. The clip transports viewers to vintage game show sets and marks Roan’s first-ever feature collaboration. Musician David Byrne and producer Dan Nigro also appear in the video.
A Retro Game Show World
Director Bardia Zeinali helmed the video, drawing clear inspiration from classic television programs like “Family Feud” and “Hollywood Squares.” The result is a nostalgic, playful visual that matches the song’s tone. Byrne takes on the role of Johnny Johnson, the host of a fictional show called “Big Expectations.”

In one memorable segment, Byrne’s character poses questions to three versions of Rodrigo, each dressed in a different outfit. He asks them “a little bit how you got here.” The scene sets a quirky, surreal mood that runs throughout the video.
Chappell Roan Delivers a New Verse
Roan makes her entrance on the set of another fictional show called “Sister Squabble.” There, she faces off against Rodrigo in a “Family Feud”-style showdown. The sequence introduces a brand-new verse from Roan, written specifically for the remix.
Her lyrics are sharp and candid. “I took her to a concert front row thought it’d be fun,” she sings. “Her hand moving up my skirt, no piercing on her tongue / She said she’d call me later, that was three weeks ago / Classic L.A. behavior, she could’ve just said no.” The verse adds a fresh and personal dimension to the track.
Dan Nigro Rounds Out the Cast
Producer Dan Nigro also makes a brief appearance near the end of the video. He shows up clutching an oversized brick phone straight out of the 1990s. His cameo fits naturally, since he produced “Expectations” as well as both Rodrigo’s and Roan’s albums. The track comes from Rodrigo’s project “You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love.”
Beyond their shared connection to Nigro, Rodrigo and Roan have a longer history together. Roan previously supported Rodrigo on both her “Sour” and “Guts” tours. Most recently, she performed at Rodrigo’s Daisy Chain Fields Festival in late August. The event featured an all-female lineup that also included Doechii, Rachel Chinouriri, Garbage and the Breeders, among others.
