Alex Kwan, a public information officer with the Calgary Fire Department, confirmed the details to Global News. Crews brought the fire under control and fully extinguished it later that afternoon.
Body Discovered in Basement
During a post-fire search of the home, firefighters found one person in the basement showing no vital signs. The individual was pronounced dead at the scene.
Kwan explained that the discovery of a fatality immediately triggered a multi-agency response. “Anytime there’s a fatality related to a fire incident, then we automatically engage investigators from other agencies,” he said.
Police Launch Suspicious Death Investigation
Calgary police subsequently classified the death as suspicious. Investigators are now working to determine the circumstances surrounding both the fire and the death of the individual found inside.
The chief medical examiner will conduct an autopsy to establish the exact cause of death. Results from that examination are expected to provide investigators with critical information as the case moves forward.
Public Asked to Come Forward
The investigation into the suspicious death at the Tuxedo Park property remains active and ongoing. Authorities have not yet released the identity of the deceased or provided further details about what may have caused the fire.
Police are urging anyone with information relevant to the incident to come forward and contact Calgary police directly. The Tuxedo Park neighbourhood is located in the northeast quadrant of Calgary.
