Afghan Ally Dies Suddenly less than a day after federal agents arrested him outside his Dallas home. Mohammad Nazeer Paktyawal was forty-one years old and a father of six. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detained him during a targeted operation last Friday. His family claims he had no known health issues before his arrest. Paktyawal had lived in the United States since the Taliban takeover in August 2021. However, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) stated his humanitarian parole expired last August. This tragic event marks the twelfth death in ICE custody this year.
Sudden Medical Emergency in Custody
Paktyawal complained of chest pains and shortness of breath during his initial medical exam. This occurred at the Dallas ICE field office shortly after his arrest. ICE officials contacted local paramedics to transport him to a nearby hospital. By Saturday morning, his condition worsened significantly as his tongue began to swell. Physicians administered CPR and other lifesaving efforts to stabilize him. Unfortunately, Paktyawal died shortly after 9 a.m. local time on Saturday. The Dallas County Medical Examiner has not yet determined a specific cause of death.
A Legacy of Military Service

Paktyawal sought asylum to protect his children from the very forces he once fought. His youngest child is an American citizen and is only eighteen months old.

Rising Political Tensions and Policy Changes
The current administration recently enacted broad changes to refugee policies. These changes have cut off critical assistance for many vulnerable Afghans. This shift followed a November incident involving an Afghan man in Washington, D.C. Consequently, federal officials have called for stricter re-examination of all evacuated individuals. DHS spokesperson Lauren Bis criticized previous programs for allowing “unvetted” nationals into the country. However, many experts argue that all evacuees underwent rigorous screening by intelligence professionals. These political shifts create an atmosphere of fear for the Afghan diaspora in Texas.
Grief Within the Afghan Diaspora
Rahmanullah Zazy, a local community leader, expressed the deep pain felt by Afghan families. Many of the 190,000 Afghans who fled the Taliban now live in Texas. “They took our community member alive and returned a dead body,” Zazy stated. The community is now demanding a transparent investigation into the circumstances of his death. Advocates argue that Paktyawal deserved protection because of his service alongside American soldiers. They want peace and stability for those who risked everything for the United States. The investigation into this tragedy continues as the community mourns its lost hero.
