Carney UAE Trade Deals are the focus of the Prime Minister’s visit to Abu Dhabi. Prime Minister Mark Carney will sign a major investment agreement. He will also begin talks for a new trade pact with the United Arab Emirates (UAE). A senior government official confirmed these plans. The official spoke to reporters aboard the Prime Minister’s plane. This official provided information on the condition of anonymity.
Strengthening Economic Autonomy
Carney intends to sign a new Foreign Investment Protection Agreement (FIPA). This agreement followed more than eight years of negotiations. FIPA aims to boost confidence for Canadian and Emirati investors. Furthermore, the Prime Minister will announce the start of talks for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA).
The Liberal government seeks to strengthen Canada’s economic independence. A key goal is expanding trade ties beyond the United States. The official noted that the Gulf region offers immense potential for partnership. Both nations share resource economies and strengths in artificial intelligence. Therefore, CEPA will accelerate commerce between the two countries. It will also address crucial issues like intellectual property rights and labour mobility. This strategy aligns with Canada’s broader goal of economic diversification.
Closed-Door Diplomacy
Carney arrived in Abu Dhabi just before midnight. His schedule for Thursday is packed with high-level meetings. He will first meet with Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber. Al Jaber serves as the UAE’s Industry and Advanced Technology Minister. Following this, Carney will meet with UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
The local government restricted media access to both bilateral meetings. Despite this, the government official suggested a benefit to the privacy. Carney can make progress on sensitive files through frank, private talks. This includes tackling challenging subjects like Sudan’s civil war. Following the closed-door discussions, Carney will visit the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque.
Investment Summit and G20 Push
On Friday, Carney is set to deliver a keynote address. He will speak at the Canada-UAE Investment Summit. The Canada-UAE Business Council is hosting this significant event. The Prime Minister will depart immediately after the summit. His next destination is the G20 Leaders’ Summit in South Africa.
There, Carney plans to discuss trade with other key partners. The senior official indicated that other Canadian trade talks face slowdowns. Carney is eager to resolve these impediments. He wants to accelerate trade progress with multiple countries. Carney UAE Trade Deals mark the beginning of a renewed global trade push. This initiative demonstrates the government’s commitment to new international markets.
