Massive Visa Rejections for Indian Applicants
Canada student visa rules in 2025 have become the strictest in a decade. According to official immigration data, 80% of Indian applications were rejected in the second quarter of the year. The figure shocked the global education community. Indian students make up nearly 40% of Canada’s international student population. Yet four out of five applicants from India were denied entry.
Declining Interest and Changing Paths
According to The PIE News, Canada’s share of preference among Indian students dropped from 18% in 2022 to just 9% in 2024. Meanwhile, Germany surged ahead, now chosen by 31% of Indian students. This shift shows how the traditional path of studying in North America is being redefined.
Why Canada is Tightening Rules
Ottawa has decided to reduce study permit approvals. As reported by VnExpress, the number of permits will fall to 437,000 in 2025, nearly 10% fewer than last year. At the same time, the minimum financial proof required has doubled to CA$20,635. Work regulations for international students have also become stricter. The government frames these policies as a response to housing shortages, strained infrastructure and political demands to prioritize domestic workers.
Germany Becomes a Top Destination
On the other side, Germany is seeing a sharp rise in international enrolments. Public universities, a strong economy and English-language programs have made the country more attractive. According to Germany’s Federal Statistical Office, the number of Indian students in 2025 reached 60,000, more than double what it was five years ago.
Looking Ahead
The Canada student visa has turned into a major hurdle for many Indians. As a result, countries like Germany — offering affordable education and better career opportunities — are capturing a larger share of this student population. The global competition for Indian talent now seems to be shifting from North America to Europe.
