After ten years at the helm of NBC Nightly News, Lester Holt has announced his departure from the anchor desk to take on a full-time role with Dateline NBC, the network’s long-running true crime and investigative series.
Holt, a respected figure in American journalism and often cited as the most trusted news personality in the country, will leave Nightly News this summer. However, this is not a farewell to the newsroom — instead, it’s a strategic shift to a role he’s quietly held for nearly 15 years: principal anchor of Dateline.
A New Chapter, Not a Goodbye
NBC News clarified that Holt is not retiring. The move is driven by his passion for long-form storytelling and investigative journalism, which aligns seamlessly with Dateline’s in-depth style. NBC has confirmed that Tom Llamas, currently anchor of Top Story on NBC News Now, will take over as anchor and managing editor of NBC Nightly News. Llamas will become the first Latino to anchor the weekday edition of the iconic program.

Holt’s journalism journey began in radio in San Francisco and evolved into a celebrated television career spanning more than 40 years. He joined NBC in 2000 after a decade at WBBM-TV in Chicago. Known for his calm presence and credibility, he covered every major national and international event of the last decade — from mass shootings and hurricanes to the COVID-19 pandemic, U.S. elections, and the war in Ukraine.
Beyond the evening broadcast, Holt created Nightly News: Kids Edition during the pandemic — a digital newscast that helped children make sense of world events and earned an Emmy nomination.
