“This may be my last day here in this office, but I will always be boldly and unapologetically Canadian. My only request is that no matter what the world throws at us, you always remain the same.”
Trudeau’s departure marks the end of an era in Canadian politics. After nearly nine years as prime minister, he will officially step down on Friday following a private meeting with Governor General Mary Simon. During this meeting, Trudeau will formally tender his resignation and recommend that Simon invite prime minister-designate Mark Carney to form the next government and select a new cabinet.
The official transition of power is set to take place at 11 a.m. EDT on Friday, when Carney will be sworn in as Canada’s 24th prime minister. Carney, a former governor of the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England, is expected to introduce a significantly smaller cabinet than Trudeau’s current team of 36 ministers.
Despite facing political challenges in recent years, Trudeau’s popularity appears to have rebounded in his final days in office. According to a Nanos poll released earlier this week, Trudeau’s approval rating has reached its highest point in the past 12 months.
