Powell expressed strong enthusiasm about returning to the show. “I’m beyond proud and excited to be back at the helm for Season 2 of ComicView: Rooftop Series,” he said. “Season 1 was amazing, and this season promises to be even better, with bigger comics and even bigger laughs. BET being back at the forefront of stand-up comedy just feels right!”
A Long History in Black Comedy
ComicView first aired in 1992 as a nationally broadcast platform for up-and-coming comedians. Over the years, it became a cornerstone of Black comedy. It also served as an early stage for performers who later became major names, including D.L. Hughley, Sommore, Cedric the Entertainer and Bruce Bruce.
The show rotated hosts throughout its original run, which lasted from 1992 to 2008. BET briefly revived it in 2014. After a nine-year absence, the series returned in 2024 as a four-episode run hosted by Mike Epps. That version filmed at Kevin Hart’s Hartbeat Weekend in Las Vegas.
The most recent reboot then evolved into the rooftop format, premiering in June under the ComicView: Rooftop Series title with Powell as host.
BET Confident in the Show’s Appeal
BET Studios EVP and head of creative Aisha Summers-Burke highlighted the show’s importance to the network. “ComicView is part of BET’s DNA, and this rooftop proved our audience is still hungry for it,” she said. “Season 2 puts a whole new class of comics in front of them, and there’s no one better than CP to hand them the mic.”
Jeru Tillman serves as executive producer of ComicView: Rooftop Series through Southfield Village Entertainment. A premiere date for Season 2 has not yet been announced.
