A deadly explosion and fire at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta has claimed at least seven lives and left dozens more injured, prompting an outpouring of condolences from leaders across Canada and around the world. The Canadian Armed Forces confirmed Sunday that the fire broke out within a training area at approximately 4 p.m. Mountain Time on Saturday.
Multiple military sources told Global News that a live-fire exercise struck a gas line or gas well on the base, triggering the initial explosion. The resulting fire spread rapidly beyond the training area’s boundaries before military and civilian emergency services moved in to contain it.

How the Fire Began
The Canadian Armed Forces described the situation in a news release, noting that emergency crews responded quickly to control the blaze and support those affected. However, strong wind conditions across much of Alberta complicated those efforts. Wind gusts of up to 100 km/h were recorded in the region at the time, fuelling the flames and accelerating their spread.
The Municipal District of Wainwright confirmed that the fire crossed the base fence earlier in the day and moved south of town. Authorities placed a fire watch over the community and urged residents to stay away from the incident area and keep roads clear for emergency vehicles.
Military and Government Response
Chief of the Defence Staff Jennie Carignan said the Canadian Armed Forces and the Department of National Defence are working with federal, provincial and municipal partners to mobilize all necessary support. “Our soldiers, civilian personnel, and emergency responders are working closely with local authorities to respond to this situation,” she said in a statement.
Governor General Louise Arbour also addressed the tragedy Sunday morning. “As Commander-in-Chief, and on behalf of all Canadians, I extend my support to the military members, families, and community affected by the fire at CFB Wainwright,” she said. “My thoughts are with the loved ones of those who lost their lives, those who were injured, and all those affected by this tragedy.”
Leaders Across Canada Offer Condolences
Prime Minister Mark Carney, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith and Alberta NDP Leader Naheed Nenshi were among the first to offer their condolences Saturday night. By Sunday morning, further tributes continued to emerge from leaders at all levels of government.
Calgary Mayor Jeromy Farkas expressed the weight of the loss. “Canada is mourning a terrible tragedy at CFB Wainwright,” he said. “Our soldiers put their lives on the line in service to our country, and to lose them here at home is devastating.”
In Ontario, Premier Doug Ford called on Canadians to unite in support of the armed forces. “As Canadians, let’s come together to support our brave men and women in uniform, who put their lives on the line to protect our freedoms and our country,” Ford wrote on social media. “Ontario stands ready to help the recovery efforts however we can.” Ontario NDP Leader Marit Stiles echoed that sentiment. “I cannot imagine the weight of this news for families with loved ones in the service. Canadians stand with you,” she said.
Condolences also arrived from beyond Canada’s borders. Ukrainian Foreign Affairs Minister Andril Sybiha expressed his sorrow in a public statement. “Deeply saddened by the tragic incident and devastating fire at CFB Wainwright in Alberta,” he said. “My heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives.”
Emergency crews continued to manage the fire south of Wainwright as of Sunday. Authorities urged the public to remain patient and cooperative as response efforts continued at the base.
