Road workers cleaning ditches in rural Manitoba have uncovered what appear to be historic human remains, prompting an RCMP investigation and forensic examination of the site.
Remains Discovered During Post-Flood Cleanup
Crews working along Road 57 North in the Rural Municipality of Wallace-Woodworth made the discovery last Wednesday while clearing ditches following recent flooding. Workers found two pieces of a human skull and a single bone, at which point they halted operations and contacted police.

Officers from the Virden RCMP received the report at approximately 2:15 p.m. on August 26. They responded to the scene and established a perimeter around the area where the remains were located, just east of Road 148 West.
Forensic Anthropologist Called to the Scene
The following morning, a forensic anthropologist and her team arrived at the site to conduct a thorough examination. Their search uncovered additional remains, including a partial skull, a right shin bone, and a lower left femur.
The Manitoba Historic Resources Branch also attended the site and participated in the search of the surrounding area. Investigators from multiple disciplines worked together to assess the nature and origin of the remains.
Carbon Dating Arranged to Determine Age
Manitoba RCMP stated that the remains are consistent with those of a historical or archaeological nature. Authorities are now arranging carbon dating and further testing on portions of the remains to establish a more precise timeline.
The discovery of historic human remains in the RM of Wallace-Woodworth raises questions about the history of the area, though investigators have not yet drawn any conclusions pending the results of scientific analysis. No further details about the origin of the remains have been released at this stage.
The RCMP has not indicated a timeline for when carbon dating results are expected to be available. Further updates are anticipated once testing is complete and findings have been reviewed by the relevant authorities.
